Plate Tectonics Vocabulary
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Convection | the movement of heat within a fluid due to differences in temperature and density. |
| Mantle | the thickest layer of the Earth, located between the crust and the core. |
| Tectonic Plates | large, rigid pieces of the Earth's lithosphere (the outermost lay of the Earth) that fit together like a puzzle |
| Seismic Waves | vibrations that travel through the Earth, usually caused by earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, or human-made explosions |
| Inner Core | the deepest and hottest layer of the Earth; a solid sphere made mostly of iron and nickel located at the very center of our planet |
| Outer Core | the liquid layer of the Earth located between the mantle and the inner core; mostly made of iron and nickel, is extremely hot 4000-6000 degrees Celsius |
| Magnetic Field | an invisible force that surrounds our planet, acting like a giant magnet |
| Crust | the thin outermost layer of our planet |
| Geosphere | the solid part of the Earth including rocks, minerals, landforms and the layer inside the Earth. |
| Density | how much mass is packed into a certain volume of a material |
| Divergent Boundary | A region where the rigid plates are moving apart, typified by oceanic ridges |
| Convergent Boundary | A plate tectonics boundary where the plates are moving into one another. Creating landforms like mountating and volcanic arcs |
| Transform Boundary | A plate tectonics boundary in which two tectonic plates are sliding past each other without creating or destroying landforms |
| Oceanic Ridge | A continuous elevated zone on the floor of all major basins varying in width 1000 to 4000 kilometers. |
| Rift Valley | deep faulted structure found along the axes of divergent boundaries; formed on land or ocean floor |
| Subduction Zone | a destructive plate boundary where oceanic crust is being pushed down into the mantle beneath a second plate; creates volcanic activity |
| Trench | a surface feature in the seafloor produced by the descending plate during subduction |
| Hotspot | a fixed, intensely hot plume of magma rising from deep within the Earth's mantle, independent of tectonic plate boundaries; creates chains of volcanic islands or features (Hawaii, Yellowstone). |
