| solid- | phase of matter that has a definite shape and volume |
| liquid- | phase of matter that takes the shape of its container & has a definite volume |
| gas- | phase of matter that has no definite shape or volume |
| plasma- | state of matter that can occur when gas becomes electrically charged |
| atom- | the basic building blocks of all matter |
| element- | a pure substance that cannot be broken down by chemical or physical means |
| compound- | a substance made of two or more elements chemically combined; represented by a chemical formula |
| mixture- | two or more substances that are together in the same place but their atoms are not chemically bonded |
| pure substance- | matter that consists of only one type of atom, molecule, or compound |
| physical property- | a characteristic of a substance that can be observed without changing it into another substance |
| solubility- | a measure of how well a substance can dissolve into another substance |
| luster- | shine or lack of shine, dullness |
| malleable- | property that allows metal to be made into sheets |
| texture- | the feel of a surface or substance |
| conductivity- | the ability of a substance to pass an electric current through it |
| physical change- | does not create a new substance and is usually reversible |
| melting- | the change in state from a solid to a liquid |
| freezing- | the change in state from liquid to solid |
| vaporization- | the change in state from a liquid to a gas |
| condensation- | the change in state from a gas to a liquid |
| sublimation- | the change in state from a solid to a gas |
| chemical property- | a characteristic of a substance that describes its ability to change into another substance |
| combustibility/flammability- | can be easily ignited and burned |
| pH- | acidity or basicity of a substance |
| reactivity- | the ease and speed with which a substance combines and reacts with other substances |
| chemical change- | one or more new substances are formed; usually cannot be reversed |
| endothermic- | requires an input of energy (cool) |
| exothermic- | releases energy (warmth) |
