weathering The natural process by which atmospheric and environmental agents such as wind rain and temperature changes disinteragate and decompose rocks
physical weathering The mechanical breakdown if rocks into smaller pieces that is caused by natural processes and that does not change the chemical compostiton of the rock material
Abrasion The process by which rock is reduced in size by the scraping action of other rocks driven by water wind gravity
chemical weathering The chemical breakdown and decomposition of rocks by natural
oxidation Oxidation is the loss of electrons or increase in oxidation state of a molecule, atom, or ion in a chemical reaction
acid precipitation Acid precipitation refers to any form of precipitation, such as rain, snow, fog, or dust, that contains elevated levels of acidic components like sulfuric and nitric acids
erosion Erosion is the geological process by which soil, rock, and other surface materials are detached, transported, and removed from one location to another by natural forces such as water, wind, ice, or gravity
deposition Deposition is the process by which a substance transitions directly from a gas to a solid or settles from a fluid onto a surface
floodplain A floodplain is defined as a flat land area adjacent to a river or stream, composed of unconsolidated sedimentary deposits

glacial drift A glacier is a large area of thick ice that remains frozen from one year to the next and covers about 10 percent of Earth's surface
creep
rockfall A rockfall is a type of mass wasting event where loose rocks or boulders break away from a steep slope or cliff and tumble downwards due to gravity
landslide A landslide is when a large amount of earth, rock, and debris moves down a steep slope
mudflow A mudflow is a rapid movement of a mixture of water-saturated soil and debris down a slope, typically occurring in hilly or mountainous areas
mountain A mountain is a landform that rises high above its surroundings, typically characterized by steep slopes and a peak
lake A lake is a large body of water that is surrounded by land
