PTU -- therapeutic actions lowers thyroid hormone levels by preventing formation of thyroid hormone in thyroid cells & lowers serum levels; partially inhibit conversion of T4 to T3
PTU -- indications safe for pregnancy, tx of hyperthyroidism
PTU -- contraindications children (liver toxicity), allergy
PTU -- adverse effects hypothyroidism, N/V, GI complaints, severe liver toxicity
PTU -- patient teaching take TID, watch for skin rash/cold intolerance
Radioactive iodine -- therapeutic actions block thyroid function, causes cells to become oversaturated w/ iodine and stop producing thyroid hormone
Radioactive iodine -- indications hyperthyroidism, for pts who haven't responded to other treatments
Radioactive iodine -- contraindications allergy, pregnancy, lactation
Radioactive iodine -- adverse effects hypothyroidism, iodinism, staining of teeth, skin rash, goiter
Radioactive iodine -- patient teaching don't eat foods high in iodine, watch labs when taken w/ anticoags, digoxin, beta blockers
Radioactive iodine -- nursing considerations monitor for hypothyroidism, blood counts, don't quit abruptly, avoid shellfish, take med same time daily, limit contact w/ others
Methimazole -- therapeutic actions prevents formation of thyroid hormone
Methimazole -- indications hyperthyroidism
Methimazole -- contraindications preg/lact, allergy, liver impairment
Methimazole -- adverse effects bone marrow suppression, paresthesia, skin pigmentation, skin rash, arthralgia, edema, urticaria
Methimazole -- patient teaching don't take w/ beta blockers, monitor for tachycardia, palpitations, weight loss
Levothyroxine -- therapeutic actions increases metabolic rate of body tissues
Levothyroxine -- indications replacement therapy in hypothyroidism, treatment of myxedema coma, management of thyroid cancer
Levothyroxine -- contraindications allergy, acute thyrotoxicosis, acute MI
Levothyroxine -- adverse effects skin reactions, loss of hair, hyperthyroidism symptoms
Levothyroxine -- patient teaching take on empty stomach, do not abruptly discontinue, check w/ provider before switching to another brand
