Alendronate -- therapeutic actions slows or blocks bone reabsorption; help lower serum calcium levels, but do not inhibit bone formation
Alendronate -- indications Paget's disease, postmenopausal osteoporosis
Alendronate -- contraindications hypocalcemia, preg/lact, renal dysfunction
Alendronate -- adverse effects abdominal pain, constipation, MSK pain, N/D, osteonecrosis of jaw
Alendronate -- patient teaching don't take w/ food, monitor adverse effects

Octreotide -- indications inhibits release of gastrin, glucagon, and insulin and inhibits GH release
Octreotide -- adverse effects D/N/C, cholecystitis, biliary tract obstruction, pancreatitis
Octreotide -- patient teaching monitor adverse effects and warning signs
Teriparatide -- indications management of hypocalcemia in pts w/ chronic renal dialysis, tx of hypoparathyroidism
Teriparatide -- lab studies calcium, magnesium, alkaline phosphate levels, radiographs of bones
Desmopressin --indications treats DI, von Willebrand disease, hemophilia, and nocturia
Desmopressin -- adverse effects facial flushing, fluid retention, increase in BP, water intoxication
Desmopressin -- patient teaching don't take with carbamazepine, digoxin, or ACE/ARBs, watch for GI problems and peripheral vascular changes
Calcitonin -- indications Paget's disease, postmenopausal osteoporosis, emergency tx of hypercalcemia
Calcitonin -- adverse effects flushing of face and hands, N/V, local injection site rxn, nasal irritation
Calcitonin -- patient teaching drink plenty of water, rotate injection sites, monitor serum calcium, arrange for periodic blood tests
