Sentence Vocabulary

| Proofread | To carefully reread your writing to check for spelling, grammar, punctuation, and capitalization mistakes. |
| Independent Clause | a group of words that contains a subject and a verb and expresses a complete thought. |
| Dependent Clause | contains a subject and a verb, but it does not express a complete thought and cannot stand alone as a sentence. |
| Fragment Sentence | an incomplete sentence that is missing a subject, a verb, or a complete thought. |
| Run-On Sentence | when two or more complete sentences are joined together incorrectly without proper punctuation or conjunctions. |
| Simple Sentence | contains one independent clause and expresses one complete thought. |
| Compound Sentence | contains two independent clauses joined by a coordinating conjunction or a semicolon. |
| Complex Sentence | contains one independent clause and at least one dependent clause. |
| Coordinating Conjunction | joins two equal parts of a sentence, such as two independent clauses |
| Subordinating Conjunction | connects a dependent clause to an independent clause and shows a relationship such as cause, time, or contrast (because, although, since, while, if). |
| Declarative Sentence | makes a statement and ends with a period. |
| Interrogative Sentence | asks a question and ends with a question mark. |
| Imperative Sentence | gives a command or makes a request and usually ends with a period or exclamation mark. |
| Exclamatory Sentence | expresses strong emotion and ends with an exclamation mark. |
