Otoscope A tool used to look inside the ear.
Structures of the Ear Ear canal, eardrum, ossicles, cochlea, semicircular canals, and Eustachian tube.
Ear Canal The tube that carries sound to the eardrum.
Tympanic Membrane The eardrum; vibrates when sound hits it.
Ossicles Three tiny bones in the middle ear that amplify sound.
Eustachian Tube Tube that equalizes pressure between the middle ear and throat.
Cochlea Spiral-shaped inner ear structure that converts sound into nerve signals.
Semicircular Canals Structures in the inner ear that control balance.
Acute Otitis Media A middle ear infection.
Ophthalmoscope A tool used to examine the inside of the eye.
Visual Acuity Sharpness or clarity of vision.
Conjunctivitis Pink eye; inflammation of the eye’s outer membrane.
Redness – Increased blood flow to an area.
Swelling Fluid buildup in tissues.
Heat Warmth from increased blood flow.
Pain Discomfort from irritation or pressure.
Tonsils Lymph tissue that helps fight infection.
Uvula Small tissue hanging at the back of the throat.
Pharynx The throat; passage for air and food.
Tongue Muscle that helps with taste, speech, and swallowing.
Asymmetry One half of the mole doesn’t match the other.
Border Edges are uneven or irregular.
Color Uneven or multiple colors.
Diameter Larger than 6 mm (about a pencil eraser).
Evolving Changes in size, shape, or color.
Malignant Cancerous and can spread.
Melanoma A serious type of skin cancer.
Benign Non-cancerous; does not spread.
Auscultation Listening to body sounds (usually with a stethoscope).
Intercostal Space The space between the ribs.
Lub-Dub Normal heart sounds.
Aortic Valve Controls blood flow from left ventricle to aorta.
Pulmonic Valve Between right ventricle and pulmonary artery.
Tricuspid Valve Between right atrium and right ventricle.
Mitral Valve Between left atrium and left ventricle.
Aorta Main artery carrying blood from heart to body.
Atria Upper heart chambers.
Ventricle(s) Lower heart chambers.
Wheezing High-pitched whistling sound.
Crackles Popping sounds from fluid in lungs.
Rhonchi Low, rattling sound from mucus.
Stridor Harsh, high sound from airway blockage.
Trachea Windpipe.
Larynx Voice box
Lungs Organs for breathing.
Bronchus/Bronchi Main air tubes into lungs.
Bronchioles Smaller airways.
Alveoli Tiny air sacs where oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged.
Pleura Membrane covering the lungs.
