| heredity | the passing of genetic traits from parent to offspring |
| genetics | the study of heredity and the variation of inherited characteristics |
| chromosome | strands of tightly wound DNA found in the nucleus |
| gene | a section of chromosome that carries the code for a particular trait |
| allele | different versions of a gene that determine a characteristic, such as hair color |
| Gregor Mendel | the Father of Genetics; studied inherited traits of pea plants; explained the passing of traits that can be inherited from generation to generation |
| dominant trait | a trait that hides the expression of another trait; written as a capital letter |
| recessive trait | a trait that is seen ONLY if both parents give the allele for the trait; written as a lowercase letter |
| phenotype | an organism's appearance (written as a word) |
| genotype | the genetic make up of an organism (written as letters) |
| inherited traits | traits that are expressed through genes and can be passed from parent to offspring |
| acquired traits | characteristics that are gained from environmental influences, injuries, or practiced skills (learned) and are not inherited |
| Punnett Square | a model used to predict the possible combinations of inherited traits |
