Lit Terms Vocab

a main character who solves the problem protagonist
character or force who is causing the problem antagonist
character vs himself - emotions internal conflict
character vs character, force external conflict
feeling the author puts into the story tone
the feeling the reader gets about the story mood
character stays the same throughout the story static character
character changes (personality) because of something that happens in the story dynamic
the turning point of the plot climax
saying the opposite of what you mean; sarcasm verbal irony
an object that takes on a deeper meaning symbol
the lesson the story is teaching theme
an author uses words to appeal to the 5 senses imagery
a character in the story is telling it about themselves; the author will use "I" as a subject 1st person
a narrator is telling the story about other characters; the author will use he or she as a subject 3rd person
the narrator is all-knowing; can see into dreams and thoughts of the characters 3rd person omniscient
hints about something that will happen later in the story foreshadowing
