TermDefinition
Balkans The ethnic nationalism emerged as they sought for independence.
Proclamation of 1763 British issued the proclamation after their victory against the French. (This act reserved all the land between the Appalachian Mountains and the Mississippi River for Native Americans).
Cherokee Nation A nation with assimilated white settler culture, adopting colonial methods of farming, weaving, and building. (They adopted a constitution based on the U.S. Constitution).
Removal Act of 1830 Because the discovery of gold on their land congress signed an act forcing the Indians to relocate to what is now Oklahoma.
Ghost Dance A ritual of dance and songs that dreamers among the Indians that the dead would soon come back and drive out the whites, restoring the lands and traditions of the Native Americans.
Tupac Amaru II A cacique who arrested and executed a colonial administrator, charging him with cruelty. This action led to the las general Indian revolt against Spain.
Criollos Spaniards born in America.
Benito Jarez A Zapotec, he was the first Indigenous president of Mexico and the first democratically elected Indigenous president in postcolonial America.
Indian Rebellion of 1857 (Sepoy Mutiny) Sepoy's thought that the British were trying to convert them to Christianity.

Sepoys Indian Soldiers under British employ. (Most were Hindus or Muslim).

Ham Nghi He was a 12-year-old emperor who supported the continuation to resist French rule until he was captured and exiled to Algeria.
Philippines Came under Spanish control; had no public education until wealthy Filipinos sent their sons to Europe to study.
Jose Rizal Sent to study in Europe he started a reform movement called Liga Filipina (Philippine League); though Liga was loyal to Spain, the Spanish feared it and so they arrested and executed him.
Philippines Revolution Filipinos had nationalist ambitions and the education needed to carry them out; several revolts broke out in provinces around Manila, masking the beginning of the Philippines Revolution.

Philippine-American War After the Treaty of Paris (1899) was ratified, hostilities had broken out in what was to be known as the Philippine-American War. (U.S. won).

Aborigines People who have been in Australia for an estimated 50,000 years and have the oldest continuous culture on Earth.
Australia The British began sending convicts and soldiers to establish colonies in New South Wales.
Māori Wars British had promised to protect the rights of the Māori; within a short time, the Māori became alarmed by the British settlement pattern and eventually started up the wars.
Treaty of Waitangi (1840) The British has promised to protect the property rights of the Māori.
Pan-Africanism Western-educated African who has a shared identity and nationalism.
Usman dan Fodio They led a group of Muslim intellectuals.
Sokoto Caliphate Established the slave trade as a means of economic growth at a time when the British were trying to stop it.
Xhosa Cattle Killing Movement Xhosa were getting sick and dying, perhaps from diseases caught from the cattle of the British settlers; they began killing their cattle's and destroying their crops.
Ango-Zulu War A war between the British and Zulu kingdom (South Africa). Eventually the British won and colonized South Africa.
Samory Toure's War An established kingdom opposed French attempts to annex West Africa, leading to the war. (French won).
Mahdist Revolt The Sudanese hated the Egyptians rule and when the British arrived it fueled more resentment. He formed an army against them and so the Egyptians and British decided to team up. (The Mahdists overran the British Egyptians).
Sudan The Mahdist movement eventually disintegrated, weakened by infighting among rival leaders. The British returned to Sudan and finally defeated the Mahdists.
Yaa Asantewaa War British was trying to subjugate the Asante Empire. At first 4 were unsuccessful but the final one they captured Yaa Asantewaa and exiled her and Asante became part of the Gold Coast colony.
