| Newcomen Steam Engine | A machine that turns the energy released by burning fuel into motion. Thomas Newcomen built the first one in 1712 to bring water out of mines. |
| Cotton Gin | Invented by Eli Whitney in 1793. It removed seeds from cotton fibers. Now cotton could be processed quickly and cheaply. |
| Revolution | A big change in the way things work or people's ideas. |
| Invention | A new object, machine, or process that no one has ever created before. |
| Patent | A legal document from the government showing that someone has the rights to an idea. |
| Erie Canal | A waterway between the New York cities of Albany and Buffalo, completed in 1825. It was considered a marvel of the modern world and allowed western farmers to ship extra crops to sell in the North and allowed northern manufacturers to ship finished goods to sell in the West. |
| Transcontinental Railroad | Connected the west and east coasts of the continental US. |
| Vulcanized Rubber | Invented in 1839 by Charles Goodyear, made the original version better and dozens of new products were the result of this discovery, like car tires. |
| Telephone | Invented by Alexander Graham Bell in 1876 to communicate via voice. |
| Incandescent Light Bulb | Invented by Thomas Edison in 1879; it revolutionized the way homes and factories work and it made the workdays longer. |
| Assembly Line | Created by Henry Ford to create the model T car. A complex task is broken down and each person does one task repeatedly. |
| Steamboat | It moves by the power of a steam engine, made it easier and quicker to travel goods across large waterways, including upstream. |
| Steel Plow | Machine invented by John Deere that could plow through thick soil so people could now farm in the Midwest. |
| Mechanical Reaper | Machine invented by Cyrus McCormick that could harvest wheat quickly. |
| Sewing Machine | Made in 1846 by Elias Howe; made making clothing faster and cheaper |
| Dynamite | A powerful but more stable explosive, invented by Alfred Nobel. |
| Telegraph | A device that used electrical signals to send messages quickly over long distances; invented by Samuel Morse. |
| Grain Elevator | Tall buildings equipped with machinery for loading, cleaning, mixing, and storing grain |
| Camera Obscura | A darkened box with a lens or opening for projecting the image of an external object onto a screen inside. It is important historically in the development of photography. |
| Triangle Factory Fire | In 1911 146 women killed while locked into the burning building (brought attention to poor working conditions) |
| Unskilled worker | A type of worker who works in a job that requires very little training. |
