Transcription factors
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Target of genes can be stimulated or inhibited | This is when specific transcriptional factors move from cytoplasym into the nucleus |
| This can turn of genes so only certain proteins are produced in a particular cell | |
| What does turning on/of particular genes in a cell do | This enables them to become specialised |
| When does transcription only occur | This only occurs when a molecule from the cytoplasm binds to the nucleus and binds to the DNA in the nucleus |
| What are these molecules | These are proteins called trasncription factors and each one can bind to different base sequences on DNA and therefore initiate transcription of genes |
| What happens once they are bound | Once bound transcription begins creating mRNA molecules for that gene which can then can be trnaslated in the cytoplasm to create the protein |
| Without the binding of the transcription factor | The gene is inactve and the protein wont be made |
| What is oestrogen | This is a steroid hormone that can initiate transcription |
| How can this initiate trasncription | It does this by binding to a receptor site on the transcriptional factor |
| What happens after it binds | The transcriptional factor causes it to change shape slightly and this change in shape to bind to the DNA to initate transcription |
