Transcription factors

QuestionAnswer
Target of genes can be stimulated or inhibited This is when specific transcriptional factors move from cytoplasym into the nucleus
This can turn of genes so only certain proteins are produced in a particular cell
What does turning on/of particular genes in a cell do This enables them to become specialised
When does transcription only occur This only occurs when a molecule from the cytoplasm binds to the nucleus and binds to the DNA in the nucleus
What are these molecules These are proteins called trasncription factors and each one can bind to different base sequences on DNA and therefore initiate transcription of genes
What happens once they are bound Once bound transcription begins creating mRNA molecules for that gene which can then can be trnaslated in the cytoplasm to create the protein
Without the binding of the transcription factor The gene is inactve and the protein wont be made
What is oestrogen This is a steroid hormone that can initiate transcription
How can this initiate trasncription It does this by binding to a receptor site on the transcriptional factor
What happens after it binds The transcriptional factor causes it to change shape slightly and this change in shape to bind to the DNA to initate transcription

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
