Who started the biological classification system? Swedish biologist Linnaeus in the 1700s, base don observable physical traits
What are the three main branches of the tree of life phylogenetic tree? Eukarya, Bacteria, and Archaea
What is a taxon? any named group of organisms (not necessarily a clade)
What is a "taxon"? a subspecies, every hierarchical level up to Kingdom
What is a clade/monophyletic group? taxon that consists of ALL the descendents of a common ancestor
What are homologous traits? features shared by two or more species that were inherited from a common ancestory
What is convergent evolution? independently evolved traits subjected to similar selection pressures that become superficially similar
What is an analogous trait? development of organs/other bodily structures within different species, resembling each other and have the same functions, but did NOT have a common ancestral origin
What is an ancestral trait? a trait that was present in the ancestor of a group
What is a derived trait? a trait found in a descendent that differs from the ancestral trait
