earthquake sudden shaking of the Earth's surface caused by the rapid release of energy in the lithosphere, creating seismic waves
fault a fracture or zone of fractures between two blocks of rock that allows them to move relative to each other
epicenter the point on the Earth's surface located vertically above the hypocenter
hot spot a volcanic region thought to be fed by an underlying mantle plume
seismic wave vibrations of energy that travel through the Earth's layers, typically generated by earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, or large explosions
volcano an opening in the Earth's crust through which molten rock (magma), gases, and debris escape from the interior
