| earthquake | a sudden and violent shaking of the ground, sometimes causing great destruction, as a result of movements within the earth's crust or volcanic action. |
| fault | a fracture or zone of fractures in the Earth's crust across which there has been significant displacement of rock masses |
| seismic wave | elastic vibrations that propagate energy outward from a source—such as an earthquake, explosion, or volcanic eruption—through the Earth's interior or along its surface |
| focus | the specific point where waves—such as light, sound, or seismic energy—converge, meet, or diverge after reflection or refraction |
| epicenter | the point on the earth's surface vertically above the focus of an earthquake. |
| volcano | a mountain or hill, typically conical, having a crater or vent through which lava, rock fragments, hot vapor, and gas are being or have been erupted from the earth's crust. |
| hot spot | a stationary, exceptionally hot region deep within the Earth's mantle that produces a plume of magma, causing volcanic activity on the crust above |
