earthquake An earthquake is the sudden, rapid shaking of the Earth's surface caused by the release of energy in the lithosphere
fault a fracture or zone of fractures between two blocks of rock.
seismic wave a mechanical wave of acoustic energy that travels through the Earth or other planetary bodies, typically generated by earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, magma movement, large landslides, or man-made explosions
focus a center of activity, attraction, or attention.
epicenter the point on the Earth's surface directly above a hypocenter or focus, the point where an earthquake or an underground explosion originates
volcano an opening in a planet's crust (like Earth's) that allows hot, molten rock (magma), ash, and gases to escape from below the surface, often building up into a mountain or hill over time
hot spot a small area or region with a relatively hot temperature in comparison to its surroundings.
