earthquake/volano

vocab

TermDefinition
volcano a vent or fissure in a planet or moon's crust, commonly forming a mountain, through which molten rock (magma/lava), ash, and gases escape from an underground chamber
hotspot a volcanic region fed by a stationary mantle plume of anomalously hot magma rising from deep within the Earth, forming volcanoes on the crust above
earthquake the sudden, rapid shaking of the ground caused by the release of energy in the Earth’s lithosphere, usually due to tectonic plates sliding past one another along a fault, volcanic activity, or, less commonly, massive landslides
fault a fracture or zone of fractures in the Earth's crustal rock across which there has been significant displacement, allowing blocks of crust to move relative to each other
seismic wave vibrations or energy release within the Earth or on its surface, primarily caused by earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, magma movement, or human-induced activities like mining and explosions
focus the exact point beneath the Earth’s surface where an earthquake originates, where rocks first break or slip, and seismic waves initiate
epicenter An earthquake's epicenter is the exact point on the Earth's surface directly above the hypocenter
