earthquake An earthquake is a sudden shaking of the ground caused by movement of the Earth’s crust along faults.
fault A fault is a crack in the Earth’s crust where rocks have moved past each other.
seismic wave A seismic wave is a vibration that travels through the Earth, usually caused by an earthquake or volcanic activity.
focus The focus is the point inside the Earth where an earthquake begins.
epicenter The epicenter is the point on the Earth’s surface directly above where an earthquake starts underground.
volcano A volcano is an opening in the Earth’s surface where lava, ash, and gases can erupt from below.
hot spot A hot spot is a place deep inside the Earth where hot molten rock rises and can create volcanoes.
