| Loyalist | People in the American Colonies who wanted the colonies to remain under the control of the king and Great Britain. Loyalists were loyal to the king and opposed independence. |
| Patriot | People in the American Colonies who wanted the colonies to break away from Great Britain. Such people favored independence for the colonies. |
| Neutralist | American colonists who did not support either side (loyalists or patriots) in the fight for independence from Great Britain. |
| Independence | freedom, especially from control by another country or government. |
| conflict | a serious disagreement or argument |
| grievances | a real or imagined wrong or other cause for complaint or protest, especially unfair treatment. |
| argument | An exchange of opposite views, typically a heated or angry one. |
| Second Continental Congress | A meeting of delegates from the Thirteen Colonies that united in support of the American Revolutionary War. The Congress was creating a new country it first named "United Colonies" and in 1776 renamed "United States of America." |
