| weather | the day to day conditions on earth atmosphere like"sunny " and "humid" |
| climatograph | to describe the conditions in a biome |
| net primary production | is the organic matter,or biomass,that remains after cellular respiration |
| canopy | tall trees from a dense covering |
| emergent layer | the top layer of the rain forest |
| understory | shorter trees make up the understory |
| epiphytes | plants that grow on other plants instead of in soil |
| deciduous | trees lose there leaves and stop phothosynthesis during part of the year |
| estivation | when condtions are dry some animals go into a deep,sleep like period or dormancy |
| coniferous | trees that produce seed bearing cones |
| hibernation | deep,sleep like state that an animal enters for the most of winter |
| permafrost | underground soil that remains frozen year-round |
| photic zone | where there is enough sunlight for photosyntesis |
| aphotic zone | where no sunlight penetrates and photosyntesis cannot occur |
| benthic zone | the very bottom of a body of water |
| littoroal zone | the shallow near shore portion of the photic zone |
| limnetic zone | farther from the shore where there are no rooted plants |
| wetlands | areas that are flooded with water at least a year |
| estuaries | bodies of water where partly enclosed by land |
| upwelling | the vertical flow of cold nutrient rich water towards the surface |
