earthquakes the intense, sudden shaking of the Earth's surface caused by the abrupt release of energy in the lithosphere, typically resulting from tectonic plates shifting along a fault line.
fault an unattractive or unsatisfactory feature, especially in a piece of work or in a person's character.
seismic wave an elastic wave in the earth produced by an earthquake or other means.
focus the center of interest or activity.
epicenter the point on the earth's surface vertically above the focus of an earthquake.
magma hot fluid or semifluid material below or within the earth's crust from which lava and other igneous rock is formed on cooling.
hot spot a volcanic center that forms when magma rises from a stationary, exceptionally hot plume deep within the Earth's mantle, penetrating the crust far from tectonic plate boundaries
