| earthquakes | the intense, sudden shaking of the Earth's surface caused by the abrupt release of energy in the lithosphere, typically resulting from tectonic plates shifting along a fault line. |
| fault | an unattractive or unsatisfactory feature, especially in a piece of work or in a person's character. |
| seismic wave | an elastic wave in the earth produced by an earthquake or other means. |
| focus | the center of interest or activity. |
| epicenter | the point on the earth's surface vertically above the focus of an earthquake. |
| magma | hot fluid or semifluid material below or within the earth's crust from which lava and other igneous rock is formed on cooling. |
| hot spot | a volcanic center that forms when magma rises from a stationary, exceptionally hot plume deep within the Earth's mantle, penetrating the crust far from tectonic plate boundaries |
