vocab
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| earthquake | the sudden, violent shaking of the ground caused by the release of energy in the Earth’s crust. |
| fault | a fracture, crack, or zone of weakness in the Earth's crust along which there has been significant movement of the rock blocks relative to each other. |
| seismic wave | vibrations of energy that travel through the Earth's layers, caused by the sudden breaking of rock (earthquakes), volcanic eruptions, magma movement, or large explosions. |
| focus | the exact point inside the Earth's crust where an earthquake rupture, tremor, or strain energy release originates. |
| epicenter | the precise point on the Earth's surface directly above the hypocenter (or focus), which is where an earthquake or underground explosion originates. |
| volcano | a vent or fissure in the Earth's crust that allows molten rock (magma), ash, and gases to escape from below the surface, often forming cone-shaped mountains through the accumulation of erupted material. |
| hot spot | a, usually stationary, volcanic region in the Earth’s mantle where exceptionally hot magma plumes rise, melt through the crust, and create volcanic activity, often far from plate boundaries. |
