earthquake the sudden, violent shaking of the ground caused by the release of energy in the Earth’s crust.
fault a fracture, crack, or zone of weakness in the Earth's crust along which there has been significant movement of the rock blocks relative to each other.
seismic wave vibrations of energy that travel through the Earth's layers, caused by the sudden breaking of rock (earthquakes), volcanic eruptions, magma movement, or large explosions.
focus the exact point inside the Earth's crust where an earthquake rupture, tremor, or strain energy release originates.
epicenter the precise point on the Earth's surface directly above the hypocenter (or focus), which is where an earthquake or underground explosion originates.
volcano a vent or fissure in the Earth's crust that allows molten rock (magma), ash, and gases to escape from below the surface, often forming cone-shaped mountains through the accumulation of erupted material.
hot spot a, usually stationary, volcanic region in the Earth’s mantle where exceptionally hot magma plumes rise, melt through the crust, and create volcanic activity, often far from plate boundaries.
