Earthquake/Volcano

Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Earthquake A sudden and violent shaking of the ground, sometimes causing great destruction, as a result of movements within the earth's crust or volcanic action.
Fault An unattractive or unsatisfactory feature, especially in a piece of work or in a person's character.
Seismic Wave Vibrations of elastic energy that travel through the Earth's interior or along its surface, typically generated by earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, magma movement, landslides, or man-made explosions
Focus The center of interest or activity.
Epicenter The point on the Earth's surface directly above the hypocenter (or focus), which is the underground location where an earthquake or explosion originates.
Volcano A vent, fissure, or opening in the Earth's crust (or another planet's surface) that allows molten rock (magma), ash, and gases to escape from below the surface
Hot Spot A small area or region with a relatively hot temperature in comparison to its surroundings.
