pituitary gland the master gland of the endocrine system that controls other endocrine glands
thyroid gland a gland in the neck that regulates metabolism through thyroid hormones
thymus a gland behind the sternum that helps develop t cells for immune function
adrenal gland glands located above the kidneys that produce adrenaline and cortisol
pancreas a gland that regulates blood sugar by producing insulin and glucagon
ovary female reproductive gland that produces estrogen and progesterone
testis male reproductive gland that produces testosterone and sperm
hormone a chemical messenger released into the bloodstream to regulate body functions
endocrine systems a system of glands that secrete hormones directly into the bloodstream
gland an organ that produces and releases substances such as hormones
receptor cell a cell that binds to a specific hormone
target cell a cell affected by a specific hormone because it has the correct receptor
estrogen female sex hormone responsible for reproductive development and menstrual cycle regulation
progesterone a male sex hormone responsible for male characteristics and sperm production
insulin a hormone produced by the pancreas that lowers blood glucose levels
cortisol a stress hormone produced by the adrenal glands that regulates metabolism and immune response
adrenaline a hormone that prepares the body for fight or flight
vasopressin a hormone that regulates water balance and blood pressure
growth hormone a hormone from the pituitary gland that stimulates growth and cell reproduction
postive feedback loop a process in which a change causes more of the same change
negative feedback loop a process in which a change triggers a response that reverses the change
type 1 diabetes an autoimmune disorder in which the pancreas produces little or no insulin
type 2 diabetes a condition in which the body becomes resistant to insulin or does not produce enough
