| Bond | Certificate issued by a government for a certain amount of money that the government promises to pay back with interest |
| Speculator | Person who invests in a risky venture in the hope of making a large profit |
| Tariff | Tax placed on goods entering a country from another country |
| Faction | Organized political group |
| Unconstitutional | contrary to what is permitted by the U.S constitution |
| Alien | Outsider; someone from another country |
| Sedition | Stirring up of rebellion against government |
| Nullify | idea that the state has the right to nullify, or cancel, a federal law that the state leaders consider to be unconstitutional |
| George Washington | Leader of the continental army who was voted as the first president |
| John Adams | Voted first president by the federalists. |
| Alexander Hamilton | Leader of the federalists. Favored national bank. Believed wealthy and educated should lead. |
| Thomas Jefferson | Leader of the republicans. Opposed national bank. Favored strict interpretation of constitution. |
| James Madison | Ally to the republicans; Thomas Jefferson. Argued in the federalists. |
