Speculator Person who invests in a risky venture in the hope of making a large profit
Tariff Tax placed on goods entering a country from another country
Faction Organized political group
Unconstitutional contrary to what is permitted by the U.S constitution
Alien Outsider; someone from another country
Sedition Stirring up of rebellion against government
Nullify idea that the state has the right to nullify, or cancel, a federal law that the state leaders consider to be unconstitutional
George Washington Leader of the continental army who was voted as the first president
John Adams Voted first president by the federalists.
Alexander Hamilton Leader of the federalists. Favored national bank. Believed wealthy and educated should lead.
Thomas Jefferson Leader of the republicans. Opposed national bank. Favored strict interpretation of constitution.
James Madison Ally to the republicans; Thomas Jefferson. Argued in the federalists.
