| What is labor identified by? | A change in the cervix. If there is no cervical change, you are not in labor. |
| How is dilation measured? | 0-10 cm |
| What is effacement? | Thickness of cervix; charted in percentage 0-100; 0 being the thickest. |
| What is station? How is it measured? | How low the head of the baby is, charted from -4 to +4. When the babies head is level to the ischial spine, it is at a 0. The higher up in the body the baby is its more negative. Once the baby is crowning it is at +4 |
| What is location? | Where the cervix is, charted as anterior, mid position, or posterior. |
| How long is the first stage of labor? | Can take weeks |
| What is the 2nd stage of labor? | First cervical change until completely dilated. |
| What is the 3rd stage of labor? What must happen to the uterus? What is a complication if this doesnt happen? How long should the 3rd stage last? | After baby is born, before the delivery of the placenta. Uterus must clamp down to prevent hemorrhage. Should last no longer than 30 minutes. |
| 4th stage of labor | The first 2 hours after she delivers the placenta. Fundal checks every 15 minutes. |
