What is lightening? Lowering of the fetus
What is a bloody show? Mucus with blood streaked
What is the TACO acronym? T- What time their water broke A - Amount; continues to leak until delivery C - Color; You want the color to look like water, should not be green or black O - Odor; should smell like a chlorinated pool`
What does amniotic fluid look like under a microscope? Fern plant
Should you take v/s during contractions? No, it may cause inflated HR and BP.
Vertex position Head down, optimal position.
OA position Optimal, if mom is in bed, baby should be facing the ground.
OP position Baby looking up at the ceiling.
Breach Head up
Frank Breach Butt first, feet up
Footling breach Feet first
Transverse position Baby is sidelying
What is labor identified by? A change in the cervix. If there is no cervical change, you are not in labor.
How is dilation measured? 0-10 cm
What is effacement? Thickness of cervix; charted in percentage 0-100; 0 being the thickest.
What is station? How is it measured? How low the head of the baby is, charted from -4 to +4. When the babies head is level to the ischial spine, it is at a 0. The higher up in the body the baby is its more negative. Once the baby is crowning it is at +4
What is location? Where the cervix is, charted as anterior, mid position, or posterior.
How long is the first stage of labor? Can take weeks
What is the 2nd stage of labor? First cervical change until completely dilated.
What is the 3rd stage of labor? What must happen to the uterus? What is a complication if this doesnt happen? How long should the 3rd stage last? After baby is born, before the delivery of the placenta. Uterus must clamp down to prevent hemorrhage. Should last no longer than 30 minutes.
4th stage of labor The first 2 hours after she delivers the placenta. Fundal checks every 15 minutes.
