Vocab for solving equations

formula a mathematical statement describing a real-world situation
equation mathematical statement expressing a relationship of equality
equation example x+7 = 10
formula example d = r * t (distance = rate * time)
expression a mathematical operation or a quantity stated in symbolic form
expression example x + 7 (no equals bar)
Variables parts of the equation not given (what you are trying to figure out) (aka unknown)
unknown another name for variable
constants parts of the equation that are given (the information that you are using to figure out the answer)(aka knowns)
knowns aka constants
terms the knowns and unknowns of an equation
terms example in x+7 = 10 the x, 7, and 10 are terms
solve an equation is finding the numerical value of the unknown that makes the equation true.
solution numerical value of the unknown that makes the equation true.
solution example in x +7 = 10, x = 3 is the solution.
