4th Grade Literature Vocabulary

| Narrative | A story that tells about events that happen. |
| Fiction | A story that is made up and not real. |
| Character | A person or animal in a story. |
| Protagonist | The main character in the story. |
| Antagonist | The character who causes problems for the main character. |
| Setting | Where and when the story takes place. |
| Conflict | The main problem in the story. |
| Rising Action | The part where events lead up to the biggest moment. |
| Climax | The most exciting part of the story. |
| Falling Action | What happens after the big moment. |
| Resolution | How the problem is solved at the end. |
| Plot | The order of events in the story. |
| Dialogue | The words characters say to each other. |
| Fantasy | A story with magic or things that can’t happen in real life. |
| Realistic Fiction | A made-up story that could really happen. |
| Historical Fiction | A made-up story that takes place in the past. |
| Science Fiction | A story about the future, space, or new inventions. |
| Mystery | A story about solving a puzzle or crime. |
| Story | A tale with characters, a setting, and events. |
| Prose | Writing that uses sentences and paragraphs (not poems). |
