Matter Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Solid Molecules tightly packed. (most dense) Molecules vibrate in place. Definite shape.
Liquid Molecules more loosely packed. Molecules move more freely. The shape can change.
Gas Molecules are the most loosely packed. (least dense) Molecules move the most freely. The shape can change.
Melting When heat is added and a solid turns into a liquid.
Evaporation When heat is added and a liquid turns into a gas.
Condensation When heat is removed and a gas turns into a liquid.
Freezing When heat is removed and a liquid turns into a solid.
Chemical Change When substances react and create a new substance. It cannot be undone or reversed.
Physical Change Changes to the size, shape, color, or phase of an object. It can be reversed.
Mixture A combination of 2 or more substances that when combined keep their properties.
Solution A combination of 2 or more substances in which one substance dissolves into the other.
Vinegar Reacts by bubbling to show a carbonate.
Iodine Reacts by turning dark purple/black with starch.
pH Scale Shows how acidic or basic a substance is
Acids Materials that have a pH of 1-6 (1 being stronger and 6 being weaker)
Bases Materials that have a pH of 8-14(8 being weaker and 14 being stronger)
