QuestionAnswer
Temperature How hot or cold something is
Humidity – How much water vapor is in the air
Circulation The movement of air or water around Earth
Global winds Large-scale wind patterns that move air around the planet
Jet stream A fast river of air high in the atmosphere
Atmosphere The layer of gases surrounding Earth
Ocean A large body of salty water covering much of Earth
Air mass A large body of air with similar temperature and humidity
Cold front Cold air pushing under warm air
Warm front Warm air sliding over cold air
Precipitation Water falling from clouds (rain, snow, sleet, hail)
Temperature gradient A difference in temperature between two areas
Hurricane A powerful rotating storm over warm ocean waterS
Thunderstorm A storm with thunder, lightning, rain, and sometimes hail
Convection Heat transfer by movement of fluids (air or water
Conduction Heat transfer by direct contact
Radiation Heat transfer by energy waves (like sunlight)
Pacific Ocean The largest ocean on Earth
Trade winds / easterlies Winds that blow from east to west near the equator
Westerlies Winds that blow from west to east in mid-latitudes
Global impacts Effects that influence the whole world
El Niño When Pacific Ocean waters are warmer than normal
La Niña When Pacific Ocean waters are cooler than normal
Warm ocean current – A stream of warm water moving through the ocean
Gulf Stream A warm current that carries heat toward the North Atlantic
Coastal regions Areas near oceans or seas
Coriolis effect – The bending of winds and currents due to Earth’s rotation
HEAT Energy that makes things warmer
Wind belts Large zones where winds usually blow in the same direction
Equator An imaginary line around Earth’s middle
Poles Earth’s top and bottom points
Ocean gyres Large circular ocean current systems
Thermohaline circulation Deep ocean movement caused by temperature and salt
Surface temperatures Temperatures at Earth’s surface
Deep currents Slow-moving ocean water far below the surface
Regional climate Long-term weather patterns of a specific area
Climate zones Areas grouped by similar climate conditions
Maritime Tropical (mT) Warm, humid air from oceans
Maritime Polar (mP – Cool, moist air from oceans
Continental Tropical (cT) Hot, dry air from land
Continental Polar (cP) Cold, dry air from land
Continental Arctic (cA) Very cold, dry air from polar land
Seasons – Changes in weather caused by Earth’s tilt
Sea breeze Wind blowing from sea to land during the day
Coastal fog – Fog formed when moist air cools near the coast
Local climate Climate of a small, specific area
Moisture content Amount of water vapor in the air
Land-sea breezes Daily wind changes between land and ocean
Hadley Cells Circulating air near the equator that drives trade winds
Upwelling Cold, nutrient-rich water rising to the surface
Downwelling Surface water sinking into the deep ocean
Earth’s rotation Earth spinning on its axis
Atmosphere The air layer surrounding Earth
