Imperialism When a powerful country takes control of weaker countries for land, resources, and power.
British East India Company A British trading company that slowly took control of India and ruled it for Britain.
Sepoy Mutiny (Indian Rebellion of 1857) A rebellion by Indian soldiers against British rule; it failed, and Britain took direct control of India.
Raj The period when Britain ruled India directly (1858–1947).
Opium Wars Wars between Britain and China because Britain sold opium in China and China tried to stop it.
Treaty of Nanjing An unfair treaty that forced China to open ports and give Hong Kong to Britain.
Spheres of Influence Areas in China controlled by foreign countries for trade and power.
Boxer Rebellion A Chinese uprising against foreigners and missionaries that failed.
How did imperialism change India? Britain controlled the economy and government Indians lost political power Railroads and schools were built but mainly helped Britain
How did imperialism affect China? China lost land and power Foreign countries controlled trade China was forced to sign unfair treaties
