TermDefinition
Anterior Infront of, towards the front surface The stomach is Anterior to the Spinal Cord
Posterior In the back of, towards the back surface, The heart is posterior to the sternum
Dorsal Towards the back side of the Human Body The spinal Cord is on the dorsal side of the body
Ventral Towards the belly side of the Human Body The belly button is on the ventral side of the body
Superior Close to the head The chest is superior to the pelvis
Inferior Close to the feet The stomach is inferior to the heart
Cranial At the head end The shoulder are cranial to the feet
Caudal At the rear or tail end the abdomen is caudal to the head
Rostral Toward the nose or mouth the frontal lobe is rostral to the occipital lobe
Medial towards the midline od the body the lungs are medial to the shoulders
Lateral away from the midline of the body the arms are lateral to the heart
Ipsilateral on the same side The right arm is ipsilateral to the right leg
Contralateral on the opposite side the right arm is contralateral to the left leg
Deep On the inside , the internal to another structure The heart is deep to the rib cage
Superficial On the outside, external to another structure the skin is superficial to the biceps brachii muscle
Proximal Closest to point of attachment to trunk the elbow is proximal to the hand
Distal Furthest from point of attachment to trunk t the wrist is distal to the elbow
