Positioning and Projections

QuestionAnswer
Position Posture or body position of the patient (erect, recumbent) or body in relation to IR
Position Overall posture of the patient or general body position
Projection Path of central ray (ex: AP, PA), or the relationship formed between the central ray and the body as the CR passes through the body (ex: AP axial, PA oblique, etc.)
Projection Identified by the entrance and exit points of the body
Erect Standing
Seated upright, but sitting on a stool
Lordotic upper body leaning backward
Recumbent lying down
Supine lying on the back
Prone lying face down
Trendelenburg’s position Head lower than the feet
Fowler’s position Head above feet
Sims’ position Prone but lying on an anterior side with that leg extended and the other knee and thigh partially flexed
Lithotomy position Supine with knees and hips flexed and thighs abducted and rotated externally, supported by ankle supports
Lateral Positions Named according to the side of the patient that is placed closer to the IR
Oblique position Body is rotated so that the coronal plane is not parallel with the table or IR, Angle of rotation is specific for anatomy of interest
Oblique position Named according to side and surface of body closer to table or IR Abbreviations: RPO, LPO, RAO, and LAO
Oblique position Body forms an angle with the IR
Decubitus Position The ONLY position that also includes CR orientation, named by side touching TABLE
Decubitus Position Requirements Patient is recumbent
3 Basic Projections AP, PA, and Lateral
AP Projection CR enters the anterior surface and exits the posterior
PA Projection CR enters the posterior surface and exits the anterior
Lateral Projection CR enters one side of the body, passing transversely along the coronal plane
Oblique Projection CR enters at an angle to the body, named by how the CR passes through the body (e.g., AP oblique)
Axial Projection Longitudinal angle of the CR of 10 degrees or more
Lordotic Projection CR passes through the body when the body is curved
Tangential Projection CR skims a surface – usually curved
Decubitus Position Requirements Central Ray is horizontal (cross table)

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
