Bone fractures and anatomical positioning

| Nondisplaced Fracture | Bone stays in alignment |

| Incomplete/Greenstick Fracture | Not all the way through the bone, most common in young children |
| Transverse Fracture | Right angle to the long axis |
| Oblique Fracture | At angle to the long axis |
| Spiral Fracture | Similar to oblique, encircles the shaft, caused by twisting |
| Comminuted Fracture | Composed of more than two fragments |
| Compression Fracture | The bone collapses under pressure, resulting in decreased bone length or width (mostly in the spine) |
| Anterior/ventral | Forward or front part of the body or of a part |
| Posterior (dorsal) | Back part of body or part |
| Superior | Anatomically above |
| Inferior | Anatomically below |
| Medial | Toward the median plane/midline of the body or body part |
| Lateral | Away from midline or away from the middle of a part |
