The study of waves and their properties

TermDefinition
Waves A disturbance that transfer energy from one place to another without transferring matter.
Mechanical wave a wave that only through mattter.
Medium A material in which a ave travels
Transverse wave a wave in which the disturbance is perpendicular
Amplitude the maximum displacement or distance moved by a point on a wave or vibrating body, measured from its equilibrium (rest) position
Longitudinal wave Causes the particles in a medium to move parallel to the direction that the waves travels.
sound wave a longitudinal wave that can travel only through mattter.
Frequency Number of times the pattern repeats in a given time
wavelength Distance between one point on a wave to the same point to the next wave
pitch How high or low a sound seems
