Lakes/Ponds/Wetlands
| Term | Definition |

| Basin | A low lying area on the Earth’s surface in which thick layers of sediment have accumulated (like a bowl-shaped area) |
| Lake | A large body of water that forms in a basin surrounded by land; Sunlight does not reach the bottom |
| Pond | A small body of water that forms in a basin surrounded by land; Shallow enough that sunlight reaches the bottom. |
| Wetland | An area of land that is saturated with water for part of all of the year. |
| Lake Turnover | Seasonal mixing of a lake when changes to water temperature cause the water to rise and sink which mixes the water. |
| Swamp | Partially or intermittently covered with water; especially with a lot of woody vegetation |
| Marsh | Area of low-lying land that is flooded in wet seasons or at high tide |
| Bog | Wet, muddy ground too soft to support a heavy body |
