Lakes/Ponds/Wetlands

TermDefinition
Basin A low lying area on the Earth’s surface in which thick layers of sediment have accumulated (like a bowl-shaped area)
Lake A large body of water that forms in a basin surrounded by land; Sunlight does not reach the bottom
Pond A small body of water that forms in a basin surrounded by land; Shallow enough that sunlight reaches the bottom.
Wetland An area of land that is saturated with water for part of all of the year.
Lake Turnover Seasonal mixing of a lake when changes to water temperature cause the water to rise and sink which mixes the water.
Swamp Partially or intermittently covered with water; especially with a lot of woody vegetation
Marsh Area of low-lying land that is flooded in wet seasons or at high tide
Bog Wet, muddy ground too soft to support a heavy body
