Psych Test One
nervous system and intro
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Motor Neurons | Descending nerve tracts, carry info from the brain signaling the muscles. |
| Sensory Neurons | Ascending nerve tracts, carry info from the senses about the environment of the brain. |
| Synaptic Gap/Synapse | the space between the neurotransmitters |
| Glial Cells | support and protect fragile neurons, fills in gaps and spaces between neurons. |
| Cell Body | fuel, maintains the neuron. |
| Nucleus | contains DNA. |
| Dendrites | receives signals and passes them. |
| Axon | carries signals away from the cell body to the terminal buttons. |
| Myelin Sheath | wraps around the axon as it transmits nerve impulses. |
| Nodes of Ranvier | areas without myelin sheath. |
| Terminal Buttons | emits chemicals called neurotransmitters |
| Frontal Lobe | creativity and behavior |
| Parietal Lobe | touch, sensory movements |
| Occipital Lobe | vision |
| Temporal Lobe | speech and comprehension |
| Cerebral Cortex | Convolutions provide more surface area for an immense amount of processing. Gray matter where our highest psychological processing takes place. |
| Corpus Callosum | Band of nerves which connects the two hemispheres together in a crisscross fashion |
| Law of Forward Conduction | Nerve impulses on neurons can only travel in one direction. |
| Thalamus | Sorts info and routes it to the appropriate areas in the higher brain |
| Pons | helps integrate movements between left and right side of the body - coordination |
| Medulla | chewing and salvation, important for circulation and breathing |
| Brainstem | area of the spinal cord that enters the skull |
| Cerebellum | coordinates voluntary movements “little brain” |
| Hypothalamus | Regulates our body’s internal environment |
| Subcortex | we are similar to animals |
