Motor Neurons Descending nerve tracts, carry info from the brain signaling the muscles.
Sensory Neurons Ascending nerve tracts, carry info from the senses about the environment of the brain.
Synaptic Gap/Synapse the space between the neurotransmitters
Glial Cells support and protect fragile neurons, fills in gaps and spaces between neurons.
Cell Body fuel, maintains the neuron.
Nucleus contains DNA.
Dendrites receives signals and passes them.
Axon carries signals away from the cell body to the terminal buttons.
Myelin Sheath wraps around the axon as it transmits nerve impulses.
Nodes of Ranvier areas without myelin sheath.
Terminal Buttons emits chemicals called neurotransmitters
Frontal Lobe creativity and behavior
Parietal Lobe touch, sensory movements
Occipital Lobe vision
Temporal Lobe speech and comprehension
Cerebral Cortex Convolutions provide more surface area for an immense amount of processing. Gray matter where our highest psychological processing takes place.
Corpus Callosum Band of nerves which connects the two hemispheres together in a crisscross fashion
Law of Forward Conduction Nerve impulses on neurons can only travel in one direction.
Thalamus Sorts info and routes it to the appropriate areas in the higher brain
Pons helps integrate movements between left and right side of the body - coordination
Medulla chewing and salvation, important for circulation and breathing
Brainstem area of the spinal cord that enters the skull
Cerebellum coordinates voluntary movements “little brain”
Hypothalamus Regulates our body’s internal environment
Subcortex we are similar to animals
