Operation AJAX The codename for the CIA-led covert operation in 1953 that overthrew Iran's democratically elected Prime Minister Mohammad Mossadegh and restored power to the Shah
Mohammad Mossadegh Iran's democratically elected Prime Minister (1951-1953) who nationalized Iran's oil industry to reclaim control from British interests
Cold War The period of geopolitical tension between the United States and the Soviet Union (roughly 1947-1991)
Nationalization The process by which a government takes ownership and control of private industry or assets, transferring them from private companies to state ownership
Anglo-Iranian Oil Company (AIOC) The British-controlled petroleum company that dominated Iran's oil industry before nationalization
Shah of Iran The title for the monarch of Iran
Mohammad Reza Pahlavi Tthe Shah who ruled Iran from 1941-1979
Majlis Iran's parliament or legislative assembly
Tudeh Party Iran's communist party that provided some political support to Mossadegh
Covert Operation A secret military, intelligence, or political operation carried out by a government or organization that is designed to conceal the identity of the sponsor
Kermit Roosevelt Jr The CIA operative who led Operation AJAX on the ground in Tehran
Containment The Cold War US foreign policy strategy aimed at preventing the spread of communism to new countries
SAVAK The Shah's secret police force, notorious for its brutal tactics, torture, and repression of political opponents

Secular Nationalism A political ideology that emphasizes national independence and identity based on citizenship rather than religion
Propaganda Information, especially biased or misleading information, used to promote a particular political cause or point of view
Psychological Warfare Military or political operations designed to influence emotions, attitudes, and behavior of enemy or neutral populations
Proxy War A conflict where major powers support opposing sides without directly fighting each other
Blowback The unintended negative consequences of covert operations that return to harm the country that initiated them
Imperial Prestige The reputation and status associated with controlling an empire or having global influence
Counterfactual History The examination of "what if" scenarios in history—considering what might have happened if events had unfolded differently
Autocratic Rule A system of government where one person holds absolute power without meaningful democratic checks or accountability
Geopolitical Relating to politics influenced by geographical factors, especially the strategic importance of locations
Declassification The process of making previously secret government documents available to the public
