PBS 2.1.4 - Blood

QuestionAnswer
Plasma The liquid portion of blood (55%), composed of 90% water and 10% solutes like proteins and nutrients.
Erythrocytes Red blood cells that transport oxygen and carbon dioxide, produced in bone marrow.
Leukocytes White blood cells responsible for immune defense.
Thrombocytes Cell fragments that facilitate blood clotting.
Hemoglobin The iron-rich protein in RBCs that carries oxygen.
Complete Blood Count A comprehensive test measuring RBCs, WBCs, Hgb, Hct, and platelets.
Hematocrit The percentage of total blood volume composed of red blood cells.
Anemia A condition characterized by a low number of RBCs or low hemoglobin, leading to reduced oxygen transport.
Polycythemia A disorder causing the bone marrow to produce too many red blood cells, increasing blood viscosity.
Sickle Cell Disease An inherited blood disorder that causes red blood cells to take on a rigid, sickle shape, inhibiting circulation.
Leukemia A cancer of the blood-forming tissues (bone marrow) causing high production of abnormal WBCs.
Basic Metabolic Panel A group of tests measuring glucose, electrolytes, and kidney function.
Lipid Panel A blood test that measures cholesterol levels, including LDL, HDL, and triglycerides.
Hypercholesterolemia High levels of cholesterol in the blood, which can lead to plaque buildup in arteries.
Plaque A substance that builds up in artery walls, consisting of cholesterol, fats, and other substances.
Saturated vs. Unsaturated Fat Dietary fats affecting cholesterol levels, with saturated fats often raising LDL cholesterol.
Canula A thin tube inserted into a vein or body cavity for fluid administration or removal.
Blood-borne Pathogen Infectious microorganisms in human blood that can cause disease, such as HIV and Hepatitis
Universal Precautions A safety standard that mandates treating all human blood and bodily fluids as if they are infectious.
