| Climate | the weather conditions prevailing in an area in general or over a long period. |
| weather | The current state of our atmosphere, including fronts, pressures and storms. |
| geothermal energy | Energy from steam or hot water produced from hot or molten underground rocks. |
| greenhouse effect | Warming of Earth's surface and atmosphere caused by heat trapping gases. Without this the earth would be too cold for life to exist. |
| ozone layer | Protective layer in atmosphere that shields earth from UV radiation. |
| storage | the action or method of storing something for future use. |
| redistributed | to spread to other areas |
| reflected | The process that occurs when light energy bounces off an object |
| absorbed | Energy is taken in by an object and makes the object warmer |
| radiated | Emit energy, especially light or heat, in the form of rays or waves |
| energy budget | Accounts for the balance between energy Earth receives from the Sun, and energy Earth radiates back into outer space |
| solar radiation | Radiant energy emitted by the sun, particularly electromagnetic energy |
| el nino | An irregularly occurring and complex series of climatic changes affecting the equatorial Pacific region and beyond every few years, characterized by the appearance of unusually warm, nutrient-poor water off northern Peru and Ecuador, typically in late Dec |
| la nina | A cooling of the water in the equatorial Pacific that occurs at irregular intervals and is associated with widespread changes in weather patterns complementary to those of El Niño |
| troposphere | Bottom layer in the atmosphere - where we live, breathe . It is also where all the weather occurs. Temperature decreases as you go up. |
| stratosphere | 2nd Layer of the Atmosphere, Ozone Layer is here, temperature increases as you move up |
| mesosphere | 3rd layer of the atmosphere that is the coldest layer. Temperatures decrease as you go up. |
| thermosphere | The uppermost layer of the atmosphere, in which temperature increases as altitude increases. This is the hottest layer |
| Ionosphere | The sublayer of the earth's atmosphere that contains a high concentration of ions and is able to reflect radio waves |
