| Term | Definition |

| Dictatorship | The army has absolute power. Controlled by a dictator. |
| Monarchy | A form of government led by an individual who holds the position for life, having inherited the position, and who passes it on to a relative, usually a son or daughter. |
| Empire | System where a centralized ruler or government has control over diverse peoples outside of its immediate borders. |
| Theocracy | Religious leaders rule the country. Religious law governs all ; people can only practice the country’s one main religion. |
| Democracy | A system of government of a country whose leaders have been elected by the people. Democracy has two forms. It can be Direct or it can be Indirect. |
| Republic | A form of government where citizens choose a representative to make decisions. (Three branches of government with checks & balances) |
| Oligarchy | A form of government in which only a few wealthy people hold power. The power of the leadership is supported by the wealthy and the military. |
| Bureaucracy | A system of government in which most of the important decisions are made by state officials rather than by elected representatives. Found in the Qin & Han Dynasties) |
