QuestionAnswer
European diplomacy before WWI
American intervention in Mexico In April 1914, Pres. Wilson ordered Marines to accompany a naval escort to Veracruz on lower E coast of Mexico. After brief battle, Marines supervised city gov. and prevented shipments of German arms to Mexican leader Huerta until they departed Nov 1914.
American neutrality After outbreak of war in Europe in 1914, Pres Wilson declared American neutrality, insisted from start that US ->neutral, a policy majority of American people endorsed. unclear, however, what “neutrality” meant in a world of close economic connections.
Warfare in Europe army + navy deployed to Western Front in Europe. The destruction taking place on European battlefields and casualty rates exposed brutality of modern warfare.
Challenges to US neutrality US ties to British and French = strong. Pres Wilson approved commercial credit loans to combatants, = more difficult for nation to claim impartiality as war spread thru Europe. Trade + financial relations w Allied nations drew the US into conflict.
Wilson in WWI Pres Wilson led US thru WW1 shifting from policy of neutrality to entering conflict in April 1917 to "make the world safe for democracy". He managed wartime economy, advocated for the "Fourteen Points" for peace, and championing the League of Nations.
American Entrance into WWI Wilson believed imminent German victory would alter balance of power in Europe. Submarine warfare and Zimmermann Telegram, inflamed public opinion. Congress declared war on Germany in 1917, entered war 3 thousand miles away w small + unprepared military.
