chemical bonding

TermDefinition
chemical bond atoms are chemically combined, either by a transfer or sharing of electrons
ionic bond an ionic substance in the solid phase
octet rule the goal most atoms have to have a full valence shell of electrons, usually consisting of 8 electrons
duet rule small atoms, such as hydrogen, helium and lithium need only 2 electrons to fill their valence shells
ionic (salt) chemical compounds formed by the electrostatic attraction (ionic bond) between positively charged ions (cations) and negatively charged ions (anions)
ion an atom with a charge due to a transfer of electrons
cation a positive ion formed by the loss of electrons
anion a negative ion formed by gaining electrons
electrolyte a substance whose aqueous solution conducts an electrical current due to the presence of mobile ions
polyatomic ion a bundle of atoms that acts as a single unit with a charge
oxidation state number assigned to keep track of electron gain or loss in redox reactions
covalent bond a bond between two nonmetals where they share electrons
single bond only one pair of electrons is shared between two atoms
double bond sharing two pairs (4 total) electrons between two atoms
triple bond the sharing of three pairs (6 electrons) between two atoms
molecular compound a substance with covalent bonds
metallic bonding the attraction of valence electrons for the positive nucleus of metallic atoms, gives metals their properties, based on the sea of mobile electrons

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
