Vocabulary
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| vector | a type of variable that includes information that indicates direction as well as strength or size |
| vector diagram | a type of graph in which the perpendicular axes represent the x- and y- directions the vector can have |
| magnitude | the strength of the force in newtons (represented as "length" on the diagram) |
| scalar | a type of variable such as mass or temperature that does not depend on direction and can be specified with a single value |
| resultant vector | a single vector that represents the net sum of two or more individual vectors |
| component force | the strength of the component |
| component | a force along the x-, y-, or z- axis that represents another force |
| resolution of forces | the process of breaking a force vector into its components |
| sine | the ratio of the opposite side of a right triangle divided by the hypotenuse |
| cosine | the ratio of the adjacent side of a right triangle divided by the hypotenuse |
| tangent | the ratio of the opposite side of a right triangle divided by the adjacent side |
| radian (rad) | the International System of Units standard unit for angular measure (57.3 degrees) |
| displacement | a change in position such as a move from once place to another |
| polar coordinates | the coordinate system that uses polar vectors |
| Cartesian coordinates | the most common coordinate system which uses vector components |
| compass | a navigation tool that divides direction into 360 degrees |
| velocity | displacement divided by time |
| speed | distance divided by time |
| acceleration | the change in velocity over the change in time |
| trajectory | a curved path |
| projectile | any object that is moving and only affected by gravity |
| range | the horizontal distance a projectile covers before landing on the ground at its starting height |
| inclined plane | a flat but sloped surface |
| ramp coordinates | when the x-axis is along the direction of motion and parallel to the ramp and the y-axis the the direction of the normal force |
