waves
the study of waves and their properties
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| wave | is a disturbance that transfers energy from one place to another without transferring matter |
| mechanical wave | is a wave that travels only through matter. |
| medium | but not through a vacuum a material in which a wave travels is called medium. |
| transverse wave | is a wave in which the disturbance is perpendicular to the direction the wave travels. |
| sound wave | a sound wave is a longitudinal wave that can travel only through matter |
| longitudinal wave | causes the particles in a medium to move parallel to the direction that the wave travels. |
| amplitude | The amplitude of a waves is the maximum distance that the wave moves from its rest position. |
| wavelength | The distance between one point on a wave to the same point on the next wave is the wavelength. |
| frequency | The frequency of a wave is the number of times the pattern repeats in a given time. |
| Pitch | Pitch The perception of how high or low a sound seems is Pitch |
| population | A group of organisms of a species living in the same environment over time. |
| trait | A characteristic of an organism; many traits are inherited (genetic). |
| environmental conditions | Variables in the environment such as food and water availability, water quality, temperature, air quality, topography, habitat, and natural hazards. |
| probability | The chances or likelihood that something will happen. |
