the study of waves and their properties
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| waves | a disturbance that transfers energy through a medium (like water, air, or solids) or space, without transferring matter itself, often appearing as a repeating pattern or vibration. |
| mechanical wave | a disturbance that propagates through a material medium (solid, liquid, or gas), transferring energy from one location to another without permanently displacing the particles of the medium itself. |
| medium | |
| transverse wave | a type of wave where the disturbance or oscillation of particles occurs perpendicularly (at right angles) to the direction of energy transfer. |
| longitudinal wave | a type of mechanical wave where the particles of the medium vibrate parallel to the direction of wave propagation, creating alternating regions of high-pressure compression and low-pressure rarefaction. |
| sound wave | a mechanical, longitudinal pressure wave that transmits energy through a medium (solid, liquid, or gas) by causing molecules to vibrate parallel to the direction of travel. |
