Waves
The study of waves and their properties
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Waves | A wave is a disturbance that transfers energy from one place to another without transferring matter. |
| mechanical waves | A mechanical wave is a wave that travels only through matter |
| medium | a material in which a wave travels |
| transverse waves | A transverse wave is a wave in which the disturbance is perpendicular to the direction the wave travels |
| Longitudinal | A longitudinal wave causes the particles in a medium to move parallel to the direction that the wave travels |
| Sound waves | A sound waves I a longitudinal wave that can travel only through matter. |
| Water waves | Water waves is a friction between the winds at sea and the water forms water waves. |
| Amplitude | The amplitude of a wave is the maximum distance that the wave moves from its rest position |
| Wavelength | The distance between one point on a wave to the same point on the next wave is the wavelength |
| Frequency | The frequency of a wave is the number of times the pattern repeats in a given time. |
| Pitch | The perception of how high or low a sound seems is pitch. |
