The study of waves and their properties
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| waves | a wave is a disturbance that transfers energy from one place to another without transferring matter. |
| medium | A material in which a wave travels is called a medium. |
| mechanical wave | a mechanical wave is a wave that travels only through matter. |
| transvers wave | a transverse wave is a wave in which the disturbance is perpendicular to the direction the wave travels. |
| soundwave | a soundwave is a longitudinal wave that can travel only through matter. |
| longitudinal wave | a longitudinal wave causes the particles in a medium to parallel to the direction that the wave travels. |
| frequency | the frequency of a wave is the number of times the pattern repeats in a given time |
| wavelength | the distance between one point on a wave to the same point on the next wave is the wavelength. |
| pitch | PITCH The perception of how high or low a sound seems is pitch. |
| Amplitude | The maximum extent of a vibration or oscillation, measured from the position of equilibrium. |
