Acid Rain chemical pollution in the air mixed with falling water
Conservation the careful use of a resource to prevent it from being wasted and make it last longer
technology the way we apply science to daily life to meet our needs or solve problems
efficiency a way to make technology work better, with less waste of materials and time
sewage water and human waste washed down sinks, showers, and toilets
organic matter that came from living things
nutrient depletion the removal from the soil of important nutrients that plants need
desertification The process of turning land with healthy soil into land with little soil that lacks nutrients
deforestation the removal of trees from an area
Malnutrition ill health that results from not getting enough to eat or not getting the proper nutrient-rich foods
sustainability a measure of how the production of food or other resources on land can be repeated from year to year
land reclamation the process of restoring an area of land to a more productive state
Fossil Fuels fuels, such as oil, natural gas, and coal, that were formed millions of years ago from plant and animal remains
Global Energy Poverty a condition where people lack access to enough energy to meet their basic needs such as lighting and the ability to cook food or heat their homes
biosphere all the living things on Earth
Hydrosphere all Earth’s water, including liquid, vapor, and ice forms
Atmosphere the layer of gases that surrounds Earth
Geosphere all the rocks and minerals that make up Earth
Crust Earth’s outermost layer of solid rock, including both dry land and the ocean floor
Mantle a layer of hot, solid rock directly below the crust
Magma a molten mixture of rock-forming substances, gasses, and water from the mantle
Outer Core a layer of molten, or liquid, metal found directly below Earth’s mantle
Inner Core a dense sphere of solid metal found in the center of Earth
Sedimentary Rock rock formed when small particles of rocks or the remains of plants and animals are pressed and cemented together over time
Metamorphic Rock rock made from different types of rock and formed from great heat or pressure, usually deep underground
Igneous Rock rock that forms when magma or lava cools and hardens
