Science Chapter 20

QuestionAnswer
Why is weather prediction important? It helps people plan their activities and can save lives. This is important for Biblical reasons, like loving our neighbor. People are worth saving because they bare God's image.
Describe the properties of an air mass. An air mass is a broad body of air in the troposphere, having similar temperature and humidity throughout. Air masses can be several kilometers thick.
How does a source region affect a mass of air moving slowly over it? As an air mass moves over and area, it takes on the temperature and humidity of the source region.
Name the sorce region of the five usual kinds of air masses. Contintental, Continental Polar, Contitental Tropical, Maritime Polar, Maritime Tropical
What happens when two air masses meet? They do not mix. The warmer air mass tends to rise up over the colder air mass, forming a front.
What changes occur when a warm air mass overtakes a cold air mass? When a warm air mass overtakes a cold air mass, cool temperatures suddenly rise, slowly decreasing pressure and maintaining steady winds. These winds often shift from the southeasternly to the direction of southwesternly
True or False: Rapidly rising barometric pressure and cooling temperatures indicate a cold front has passe through your area. True
True of Flase: THe enhanced Fujita - Pearson and the Saffir - Simpson scales classified tornadoes by the amount of damage they do, not by their sizes. True
List 3 sources of weather data used by the National Weather Service to develop weather forecasts. 1. Stations 2. Airports 3. Sattelites
What is lightning? Lightning is an electrical discharge that either forms between clouds or between a cloud and the ground.
What is a tornado? A rapidly spinning mass of air and clouds that create a downward air spin. This mass forms from a cumulonimbus cloud
True or False: Weather maps are not really useful to meteorologists for predictions because by the time they get the maps, the data is old news. True
What is a hurricane? It is among the largest storms of all. It is a cyclonic wind storm that forms over tropical or sub-tropical oceans.
WHat is a tropical storm? When I cyclonic storm's windspeeds reach 39 mph.
What is the eye of a hurricane? The very calm center of a hurricane
What is storm surge? Storm surge is a higher than normal water level that is caused by hurricanes.
List the 4 types of storms 1. Winter storms 2. Thunder storms 3. Tornadoes 4. Hurricanes
What precaution should your family take when driving a long distance in snow? Your family should dress warmly, bring high energy snacks and water, along with extra blankets incase your vehicle gets stranded.
Which of the storms discussed in this chapter is the most common? Thunderstorm
Where do most of the tornadoes occur in the world? In the southern and central regions in the United States, called Tornado Alley.
What 3 things cause a hurricane's wind and energy to diminish over a land mass? Trees and irregularities over land contour resist the storm's wind. Less heat and water vapor are available, so there is less energy being added to the storm.
How does the reliability of weather forecasts change as the forecast period moves further into the future? As the forecast becomes more distant, the reliability of the forecast decreases. Man factors affect weather. THe further we look into the future, the less accurately we can predict the affect of these factors.
How does the Nation Weather Service obtain weather data from unpopulated locations? The NWS uses automated weather stations or weather buoys.
Why is a 1-day forecast more liable than a 7-day forecast? THe mathematical weather models are more accurate for a 1-day forecast. There are too many variable factors that work together to affect weahter, making long-range forecast less accurate.
